U6th Leavers Mass & Dinner May 2010

We celebrated with great joy on the evening of Friday May 28th with our Year 13 girls as they commenced their formal study leave.

To acknowledge this significant moment on their journey of life, we united together: students, their parents, staff, Sisters, Governors and friends of the community to celebrate a Mass of Thanksgiving in the Chapel followed by a formal dinner in the Sports Hall.

Gifted & Talented Day - a great success!

Today the Junior Department had the opportunity to explore learning in areas not usually experienced in the classroom.  Years three, four, five and six were posed puzzles and challenges which required thought processes different from the norm, therefore encouraging them to think laterally and work together as a team.  This was a wonderful experience and one which everyone, staff and girls, thoroughly enjoyed.  In the afternoon the Prep 5s and 6s welcomed visitors from other local schools; together they played puzzles, tackled obstacle courses and worked in teams at initiative exercises.  The final group of the afternoon worked out how to balance twelve nails on a thirteenth.  Could you do this?  Ask your daughter and she may tell you how it's done…

Mamma Mia Party a Huge Success

On Saturday 15th May, Notre Dame turned Greek for the night as the school hosted the Friends of Notre Dame Mamma Mia Party, raising money for the Performing Arts at Notre Dame.

The sports hall was remarkably transformed into a Greek Taverna, complete with rustic bar at one end and beach at the other, as 250 people packed in to enjoy fun and friendship, and raise some funds at the same time.

The auction, conducted by ND parent Ian Bond, saw a dozen lots 'change hands', thanks to the incredible generosity of a number of donors - everything from Beer for a Year and tickets to Wimbledon Centre Court to holiday villas both at home and abroad. As the auction got underway it was clear there were some determined bidders, and as the hammer fell on the final lot the Performing Arts Centre fund was better off by more than £20,000!

But that was not all. As many of you know, a dozen or so themed baskets packed with goodies galore raised in excess of £3500. All told, the evening generated more than £25,000, and thanks to our mysterious benefactor who has chosen to double all monies raised this year, the evening saw more than £50,000 added to the fund to help improve the fit-out of the new Performing Arts Centre. So, for example, the seats will now be more comfortable, there'll be a full orchestra pit, sound insulation will be improved, sound and lighting systems quality will be more professional etc etc.

A full album of pictures taken on the night is available to view HERE, using the usual Notre Dame username and password. This includes ALL the images taken 'on the beach' by Real Life Photography's Jonathan Stewart, which you can download and print as you wish.

Feast Day Mass & Celebrations May 2010

His Excellency Archbishop Faustino Sainz Munox, the Papal Nuncio enjoyed his day with us and the Sisters of the Company of Mary Our Lady, on Friday to celebrate the feast of St Jeanne. We were all very lucky with the weather, enjoying lunch outside and time for big and small sisters to play together.

Mamma Mia Party Auction Lots announced

The Mamma Mia Party is just around the corner. Plans are set, the tickets have sold out, and we're on for a magical night. If you've been to one of these amazing Notre Dame parties before, you know it is a great night, with a serious purpose. Well, two serious purposes. Number one – a fun, social night of bonhommie. Number two – an opportunity to raise it bit of extra cash to bolster the coffers and enable the purchase of stuff that might not otherwise happen. In this case, it is the additional fit and spec upgrade for the new PAC which FoND is currently raising money for, and to this end there is an auction of amazing stuff, more about which you can see and read here. If you would like to place a bid for any of the lots email mammamia@fond4u.co.uk

Santiago Choir Tour Report and Photos

What a successful tour!

The first day set the scene for this tour with an exciting and overwhelming welcome from our school in Santiago - Colegio Compania De Maria. The photo below is taken inside their beautiful Lestonnac Chapel (see St Jeanne's statue on the left):

One of the sixth form students spoke to us about her life in the school and then the younger Spansih pupils entertained our girls with a play followed by a delicious lunch. We then met up with another Lestonnac school from Vigo to rehearse for our special joint concert to commemorate 250 years of the Company of Mary Our Lady School in Santiago:

The next day, our musical reputation had been spread across Galicia and our forthcoming concert in the Cathedral that evening was the talk of the town!

The newspapers had reported our concerts and the girls were being recognised as they did a spot of sight-seeing in Santiago - hence the 'undercover' glasses!

Our last concert was preceded by a coastal tour to A Coruna. As you can see from the photo the weather was a little wild:

Our final destination was a delightful church in Mens, a country hamlet where all the villagers descended on their ancient church for a memorable concert.

Santiago Choir Tour Update

The choir performed to a packed church last night for their final concert of the tour.

Our reputation has spread throughout Galicia and indeed we seem to have gained a large following.

Press reporters from several newspapers have covered our exploits.

This morning the girls are packed and ready to have their last shop in sunny Santiago!

Adios!
