On Sunday we will begin the season of Advent.  Although preparation for Christmas seems to begin earlier each year in terms of what is on the shelves in shops and when decorations start to appear in streets and houses, in the church’s calendar it is the first Sunday of Advent that marks the start of Christmas preparation.

Advent Wreath

This will be evident in school from next week, with an Advent wreath in the chapel, our wonderful crib being put in place, and our prayer cloths being changed from the green of Ordinary Time to the purple of Advent.

Advent is a time of expectant waiting.  The season reminds us that at the heart of Christmas is Christ, the Saviour foretold by Old Testament prophets.  It helps us to remember, amongst the busyness and the excitement of buying and wrapping gifts, writing cards and preparing meals, that when Christmas comes we will be celebrating the greatest gift of all, the gift of God-born-man.

May this Advent be a time of excitement and eager anticipation for us all, but also a time where there is calm and peace to reflect and prepare our hearts to welcome the Christ-child, when 25th December comes.

God bless,

Mr George, Chaplain
