Mathematics & Further Mathematics
In terms of future jobs and career opportunities, A-level Maths scores more highly than just about anything else.
David Willetts, Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills (2014).
The department consists of a team of six enthusiastic, highly-qualified and experienced Mathematics teachers who provide support to pupils at all levels as they learn to master mathematical fluency.
Mathematics lessons are delivered in well-equipped classrooms, each with an interactive whiteboard. The use of ICT in Mathematics is encouraged (either in ICT suites or in class via student notebooks). Every girl has their own unique log-in for software which enables them to access up-to-date revision and practice material encouraging independent learning both in school and at home.
A Level Mathematics is a popular choice in the sixth form and a high proportion of our girls achieve top grades (A/A*). A Level Maths students and Maths graduates are in high demand by universities and employers.
Students develop transferable analytical, communicative, investigative, learning, problem solving and self-management skills.
The qualifications available at Notre Dame are AS Mathematics, A2 Mathematics, AS Further Mathematics or A2 Further Mathematics. We would at expect at least a Grade 7 at GCSE for girls hoping to study A Level Mathematics and Grades 8 or 9 at GCSE for anyone wishing to study A Level Further Mathematics. Our girls take GCE Edexcel examinations and we use regular assessments throughout both years to allow the girls to keep track of their progress and help prepare them for final examinations. We participate in the UKMT Senior Mathematics Individual and Team Challenges and Mathematical Olympiad for Girls. In recent years, some of our girls have progressed to follow-on Kangaroo or Olympiad rounds.
