This week, Year 4 began their ‘Money’ unit in maths with a bit of a problem to solve: a jigsaw puzzle!
Using their previously learned knowledge of fractions, the girls worked out how to write amounts of money using decimal places as well as whole pounds. The girls worked in pairs to make a monetary value or solve a calculation involving decimal poumds. Showing the ‘Shopkeeper’ (well done, Mrs Humble!) their answer, if they were correct, the Shopkeeper gave them a piece of the jigsaw puzzle.
Using paired and shared work, together with concrete money resources, the girls were able to apply prior knowledge and explore new maths concepts to solve a puzzle together. What a wonderfully, enthusiastic group of girls who loved problem solving and reasoning with each other to achieve solutions to new problems.
