Prep VE Day Celebrations

VE Day Celebration - V Formation

A beautifully sunny, warm day saw VE Day flags flying in the cool breeze across the playground, and the girls arriving adorned with red, white and blue hair accessories as well as some brilliant patriotic nail varnish designs and bracelets! Celebrations for the 80th Anniversary of VE Day across the Prep School continued throughout the day.

Beginning in the morning, the girls watched a presentation that explained about VE Day and why it is so important to remember and celebrate such a landmark day in our history. Teachers shared BBC Newsround’s video about VE Day and information about the public celebrations that have already taken place across the UK, and that are continuing throughout this week.

The girls designed their own VE Day bunting, whilst listening to music from the time such as Vera Lynn’s ‘White Cliffs of Dover’ and ‘We’ll Meet Again’. The bunting was displayed all along the corridor to the Dining Hall, providing a colourful reminder of this special day. Mrs Kewley had many library books on display along the main corridor for girls to stop and peruse throughout the day, and even more in the library. Some girls shared stories and pictures of great-grandfathers who fought in World War II with their friends in class; if there are any more WWII family photos and stories to share, please email to your class teachers.

Sophie in Year 3 shared her story of her great grandfather.

In the afternoon, the girls enjoyed a sweet treat from home and danced to some more ‘modern’ music during an outdoor disco, ending with a final rendition from Vera Lynn to send us on our way back to class.

Humanities Club girls designed some more posters and decorations that will be displayed along the corridor with the bunting over the next few days.

A wonderful way to commemorate such an important milestone in our lives: At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.’
