¡Hola a todos!
In our A level studies of Spanish culture, we study a very interesting unit about the influence of Hispanic celebrities and idols. Personally, my number-one favourite Hispanic artist has to be Camila Cabello (sorry Julieta Venegas), and I thought that this would be a great opportunity to promote and talk about my favourite album from her, C,XOXO.
To give some context about her, Camila Cabello is a Cuban singer-songwriter, who writes songs in both English and Spanish. Some of her most famous ones include “Señorita” and “Havana”, the latter of which I I used to listen to on repeat on my way to school in Hong Kong. Aside from her musical career, she has donated to and worked with multiple charities and mental health organisations.
I’m lucky enough to be going to her C,XOXO concert tour in July this year, and obviously I am VERY excited – it’s not everyday that I can watch a singer – live – who also appears in extracts in my Spanish past papers. I wanted to share my love for her hew newest album, because unfortunately it isn’t one of her most popular (though I think that should be changed).
C,XOXO, from my perspective, is all about her own experiences – romance, how she deals with different emotions, with multiple interludes and collabs with other artists as well. Sonically and lyrically, the album has many lovely notable songs – I would say that the genre is more pop/party/electric, something which I usually wouldn’t listen to, however many songs on her album have interested me a lot.
This album is her first in quite a while, following the release of a mostly Spanish album, ‘Familia’, a few years prior. I’m starting to listen to her Spanish songs as well recently – perhaps for my next article I will do a spotlight on them. Now I will recommend some of my favourite songs – I am aware that some of them have some more mature language, so I will recommend ones without it (I prefer them anyway).
My absolute favourite from her is ‘Twentysomethings’, followed by ‘Godspeed’, and ‘DREAM GIRLS’ (which I think would be the perfect party song). It’a great to listen to an artist’s songs and then see an extract about them in my Spanish exam questions, because it’s something familiar and also very interesting to me. I hope that you can give her songs a listen – this album deserves a lot more recognition.
¡Hasta luego!
