Black History Month 2025

UK Black History Month 2025

October marks the start of Black History Month (BHM) in the UK. This is a time to look back and celebrate the people of African and Caribbean heritage, highlighting their achievements and contributions to the British economy, culture and history.

What is Black History Month UK?

Black History Month UK began in October 1987 by Akyaaba Sebo, a special projects coordinator of the Ethnic Minorities Unit at the now defunct Great London Council. His aim was to encourage Black British children and young adults to discover more about their heritage and the achievements of so many Black people throughout History. Sebo wanted to raise awareness about the rich and diverse history of black people UK, as well as raising awareness of the many difficulties black people have had to overcome.

Black History Month provides an opportunity to acknowledge the significant contributions made by black individuals to various fields, including politics, science , sports ,arts and civil rights. It also ensures a way to address issues of racial inequality and discrimination which still exists in todays society. The exact focus and events during Black History Month may vary from year to year, for example he focus this year is Black women in history, nevertheless the overarching goal remains the same: to celebrate Black history and promote this amongst all members of society.

Taking inspiration from Black History Month (also known as African American History Month) in the United States. The first event was held on 1 October 1987 at County Hall, American historian Dr. Maulana Karenga attended, Karenga founded the African American holiday of Kwanzaa; Kenyan women’s activist Wanjiru Kihoro also attended.
Over the years Black History Month has evolved into a national movement recognised by the British government and observed throughout the UK. It is also recognised in other parts of the world during October in Ireland and the Netherlands. In the US, where Black History Month originated, the awareness month is held in February. It is also celebrated in Canada where it was officially recognised in 1995. Since the 1990s, the significance of Black History Month has gradually increased throughout continental Europe and it is now observed in Germany, Belgium, and Italy in February.

Why is it celebrated at different times across the globe?

The timing of Black History Month varies across the globe due to a combination of historical, cultural, and contextual factors. While February is a common choice for many countries, other dates are selected to reflect the unique histories and experiences of Black communities in different regions. For example In the United States and Canada, Black History Month is celebrated in February. This timing is predominantly due to the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln (February 12) and Frederick Douglass (February 14), both of whom played crucial roles in the abolition of slavery and the advancement of civil rights. Furthermore October was chosen in the UK because it aligns with the African, Caribbean, and Black British communities’ cultural events and activities.

What are the aims of Black History Month in the UK?

Ultimately, Black History Month aims to institutionalize the recognition of Black history as an integral part of the national narrative. By doing so, it legitimizes the importance of studying and preserving Black heritage and history. The month seeks to celebrate, educate, and create awareness about the contributions and experiences of Black communities, while also promoting inclusivity, challenging prejudices, and fostering dialogue and understanding among all members of society.

What is the theme of Black History Month UK 2025?

‘The theme for Black History Month UK 2025 is “Standing Firm in Power and Pride,” a powerful tribute to the resilience, strength, and unwavering commitment to progress that defines the Black community across the globe. This year, the theme highlights the profound contributions made by Black people be they leaders, activists, or pioneers who have shaped history, while also looking towards a future of continued empowerment, unity, and growth.

The theme focuses on two core values: power and pride.
Power represents the influence, leadership, and capacity to effect positive change. It acknowledges the visionaries who have led political, civil rights, and social movements, as well as those who have broken barriers in business, education, and the arts. Their legacies remind us that true power is not about titles but about the collective strength, courage, and unity used to forge a more equitable future for all.

Pride reflects cultural identity, heritage, and the celebration of Black excellence. From the art and music to the stories passed through generations, pride is the heartbeat of Black communities worldwide. It’s about knowing where we come from, embracing our history, and walking boldly into the future without compromise or apology. Pride is a declaration of the beauty, the resilience, and the unmatched contributions of Black culture to the world.

Black History Month 2025 will honour key anniversaries, including the 60th anniversary of the Race Relations Act, the death of Malcolm X, and the Bristol Bus Boycott, led by the late Paul Stephenson. These milestones serve as a powerful reminder of the ongoing struggle for equality and justice, and the tireless efforts of those who have fought for the rights of Black people and communities.

This year’s theme is not only about remembrance but a call to action. It invites individuals and communities to stand firm in their power with pride, and to actively shape a world where Black voices are heard, valued, and celebrated. Black History Month 2025 will challenge us to break down barriers, continue pushing for progress, own our spaces and walk confidently into the future.

Join us in honouring Black history, recognising the visionaries, and working together to build a brighter future. Black History Month 2025 will be a celebration of power and pride, inviting everyone to stand firm in both and continue the work of shaping an inclusive world.
‘This month we will pay tribute to the resilience, strength, and unwavering commitment to progress that defines Black communities across the world. It highlights the vital contributions of leaders, activists, creatives, and pioneers who have shaped our shared history, while inspiring a future rooted in unity, empowerment, and cultural pride.’ Cherron Inko-Tariah MBE.
