🎠Year 10 Drama GCSE: Exploring Small Island ðŸŽ
This term, our Year 10 Drama GCSE students have been immersing themselves in the National Theatre’s critically acclaimed production of Small Island. Based on the novel by Helen Edmundson, the play powerfully portrays the experiences of first-generation Jamaican immigrants in post-war Britain.
Told through the eyes of four interwoven characters, Small Island explores themes of identity, belonging, and the heartbreaking racism faced by the Windrush Generation upon their hopeful arrival in Britain during the 1940s.
As part of their first lessons on Live Theatre essay writing, a vital and exciting component of the GCSE course, the girls have been analysing the performances, staging, and storytelling techniques used in the production. Their thoughtful reflections are helping them build the skills needed to evaluate live theatre with confidence and insight.
This exploration not only deepens their understanding of drama but also encourages meaningful conversations around history, culture, and representation in the arts.
