🚌 Year 11 Geography Field Trip to Shropshire

Our Year 11 geographers embarked on a four-hour coach journey to Shropshire, with a welcome stop at a service station to refuel for the adventure ahead. Upon arrival, we settled into our rooms before heading to our first lesson, which introduced us to the fieldwork ahead. During the session, we formed hypotheses about how river characteristics such as velocity and discharge might change downstream, a key focus for the following day.
After a delicious meal in the cafeteria, we enjoyed some free time exploring the site before heading back to our rooms for a well-earned rest.

🌊 Tuesday: River Studies in Carding Mill Valley
We travelled to the upper course of the River Ashbrook in Carding Mill Valley, where we measured the river’s width, depth, and velocity. Using specialist equipment, we learned how to collect and calculate accurate data, identifying patterns as the river flowed downstream. The scenery was stunning, surrounded by waterfalls and v-shaped valleys, it was a truly memorable experience.
Back at the field study centre, we were taught by expert geographers who deepened our understanding of the river’s physical geography and helped prepare us for Paper 3 of our GCSEs.

🚦 Wednesday: Urban Fieldwork in Shrewsbury
On our final day, we visited Shrewsbury town centre to investigate transport sustainability. We conducted questionnaires with a range of age groups, asking about congestion, transport management, and the use of the park and ride scheme. We also carried out traffic counts to measure vehicle movement in and out of the town.
After our fieldwork, we had free time to explore the medieval town, enjoy some shopping, and grab lunch with friends.

📊 Back at the Centre
We analysed our data, identified trends, and evaluated our hypotheses on traffic sustainability. Then it was time to head home, tired but happy, and full of new knowledge and experiences.
