At Mass this coming Sunday we will hear the words of Jesus from the Gospel of Matthew: ‘You are the light of the world.’
In one of the other gospels, the Gospel of John, there are a number of ‘I am …’ statements uttered by Jesus. ‘I am the bread of life,’ ‘I am the good shepherd,’ ‘I am the gate,’ for example … and ‘I am the light’.
So Jesus says both ‘I am the light’ and ‘You are the light.’
The mission of a Christian is to seek to be with Jesus and to strive to be like Jesus. This calling to be like Jesus could not be better illustrated than in these two statements of Jesus.
May the light that is within us shine brightly today, bringing hope, peace, comfort and love to all whose lives are illuminated by our presence.
