This week in our Year 12 Spanish lessons we looked into Spanish singers and their music. This was really interesting and a great way to improve our Spanish, so we decided to each look into a Spanish song. We looked at the song meanings and had to do a two minute presentation on our chosen song in class. An example of part of one of our presentations is below.
‘Si antes te hubiera conocido’ by Karol G

La canción tiene un estilo merengue que es un homenaje al sonido de la República Dominicana, asà que, a mi juicio, se siente muy veraniega. La letra trata de soñar con un amor que nunca será, puesto que el hombre está comprometido con otra mujer asà que el argumento de la canción es sobre oportunidades perdidas y el mal momento. La melodÃa de esta canción me recuerda a las vibras despreocupadas de la playa en el verano. Por eso, aunque la canción trata del anhelo por algo que no puedes tener, aún la canción es animada y muy movida.
DirÃa que la canción ha tenido un impacto positivo no solo porque es alegre, sino también porque conecta emocionalmente con la gente. Asimismo, la canción celebra la música latina y tiene un ritmo bailable que transmite energÃa positiva y hace que la gente la asocie con momentos felices. Por otro lado, es posible que otros discutan que la canción fomenta un enfoque en el pasado y ‘qué hubiera pasado si…’, mientras que es más importante mirar hacia adelante y ser optimista.
Es más, la canción ha tenido un gran impacto, se refleja en el hecho de que la canción rompió récords, consiguió mil millones de vistas en Youtube, y ganó ‘La canción del año’ en los Latin Grammys.

The song has a merengue style that is a tribute to the Dominican Republic, so, in my opinion, it feels very summery. The lyrics are about dreaming of a love that will never be, since the man is engaged to another woman so the song’s theme is about missed opportunities and a bad time. The melody of this song reminds me of the carefree vibes of the beach in the summer. Therefore, even though the song deals with longing for something you can’t have, it’s still lively and upbeat.
I would say that the song has had a positive impact, not only because it’s cheerful but also because it connects emotionally with people. Furthermore, the song celebrates Latin music and has a danceable rhythm that transmits positive energy and makes people associate it with happy moments. On the other hand, it’s possible that others might argue that the song encourages a focus on the past and “what if…,” whereas it’s more important to look ahead and be optimistic.
Furthermore, the song has had a huge impact, reflected in the fact that it broke records, garnered one billion views on YouTube, and won “Song of the Year” at the Latin Grammys.
