Last Thursday, the Year 12 and 13 Spanish students were given the wonderful opportunity to attend a Spanish ‘speed debate’ at Reeds school. We had a fantastic time practising the language in 2-minute-long debates with students from many other schools, discussing chosen themes such as ‘the changing role of women in Hispanic society’ and ‘how historical monuments are crucial to Hispanic heritage’.
For the Year 13s, this is our second time going, and we had yet again a lovely time being able to talk to people our age who share our love for Spanish. We even saw some familiar faces! As we had a chance to talk with a lot of students from many other schools, it was incredibly interesting to get to know different perspectives on these topics, which we are studying. It was lovely to be in a room full of people who also had a passion for languages, and we had a great time chatting to them all.
Everyone was friendly, and like last year, there was even a lovely spread of Spanish foods for us to try! The staff there were all very welcoming, and the experience was overall very fun and beneficial as well. Muchas gracias to Mr Fernández for organising this trip (and for driving us!), as well as to Mrs MacDonald for joining us. It is unique opportunities like these which really immerse us in learning Spanish.

Last Thursday, we were lucky enough to participate in the annual Reed’s Spanish speed debate. As well as the delicious traditional Spanish food that was offered to us, this was an amazing opportunity to practice our Spanish speaking with students from other schools, talking about different topics we have learnt over the past two years. I found this a really enjoyable and helpful experience and thank you to the Spanish department for organising this!

I really enjoyed the speed debate yesterday and would definitely do it again. I wish we had more time at the start to meet the people before we began the discussion. Other than that, it was a great opportunity to meet other Spanish students and develop my spoken skills.

Last Thursday evening, we attended the Spanish Speed debate at Reeds, where we met numerous other schools and had debates in Spanish. We discussed the topics that we have been studying, and we continually changed partners. This allowed us to talk to many new people from various schools who are also studying Spanish, and to practice our spontaneity when speaking, which is very important for the Spanish A-Level speaking exam. Therefore, this debate offered us the opportunity to meet others and to practice our Spanish, speaking with those of a similar level. Overall, I really enjoyed the debate, and it was a great evening.
