Year 5 Explore Common Factors using Sorting Hoops

Year 5 Maths

5A were given sorting hoops during the ‘Multiplication and Division’ topic and asked to create a Venn diagram. A Venn diagram uses overlapping circles to illustrate the logical relationships between two or more sets of items and serves to graphically highlight how the items are similar and different. In this task, the sorting hoops were used to sort similar and different factors of two multiples.

The girls had to use their times table knowledge for this task. It is so important that students have a firm grasp of their times tables going into Year 5 as it gives them a solid arithmetical foundation for many maths topics and supports problem-solving.

Well done, 5A, for your fabulous maths work this year—you’ve really challenged yourselves!

Year 5 Explore Perimeter and Area with Geoboards!

Year 5 had a fantastic time exploring perimeter and area using Geoboards and elastic bands. It was wonderful to see the students creating and investigating a range of compound and rectilinear shapes. They enjoyed experimenting with both regular and irregular forms, deepening their understanding through hands-on discovery.

This engaging activity helped them recall and consolidate their knowledge of shape properties from Year 4, while also laying a solid foundation for learning how to calculate the perimeter and area of polygons using formulas.

Well done, 5L, for your fabulous maths work this year—you’ve really challenged your thinking!
