European oysters used to improve water quality in Northern Ireland
European oysters are being used in a conservation project around the UK. One example of this, is in the Belfast Lough in Northern Ireland where the oysters are being used to restore native oyster beds. These oyster beds improve water quality, defend coasts from big waves and support juvenile fish species. The oyster beds have been restored through conservation efforts of volunteers who placed the oysters on biodegradable potato starch bags for lying on the seabed. They hope that due to these oysters the water quality of the lough will be improved. As it has been deteriorating due to pollution from agriculture.
