The ND6 students were treated to some fascinating insights on degree apprenticeships and creative careers recently, when alumnae Arabella Watt and Helena Roberts dialled in to take part in our popular Career Pathways programme.
Speaking shortly before National Apprenticeship Week earlier this month, Arabella Watt shared her experience of doing a Degree Apprenticeship with global tech firm Cisco Systems. Despite holding a place to study History at UCL, Arabella – who left Notre Dame when schools were forced to close due to the pandemic in 2020 – eschewed university for the three-year course, which combined working as a Cross Functional Apprentice with studying for a degree in Digital and Technology Solutions.
Graduating with a First Class Honours in 2023, Arabella was promoted to the role of Business Development Analyst and is now building a flourishing career. She shared tips on how to find degree apprenticeship opportunities and reassured students that, while she hadn’t had the ‘uni’ experience, she had enjoyed plenty of social and networking opportunities with her fellow apprentices at Cisco.
Next to join us was Helena Roberts, who is Junior Designer at iconic British pottery brand Emma Bridgewater. Helena shared her career journey, which included a Design Crafts degree at De Montfort University, followed by a Masters in Textiles at the Royal College of Art.
Helena described the satisfaction of seeing her artistic ideas take shape from initial sketches through to the final finished product. She also said that CAD computer skills are important and that a typical day could also involve preparing artwork, coming up with ideas for new designs or assisting on photo shoots. Asked what she would look for in a new recruit, she highlighted personality, curiosity and an enthusiasm for learning. Above all she advised students to do work experience in potteries, design studios or art galleries and take advantage of every artistic opportunity.
Sincere thanks to Arabella and Helena for giving up their time to talk to the students. We wish them continued success in their careers.
