Year 9 Theatre Trip to See Oliver!

Y9 Theatre Trip - Oliver

Year 9 enjoy a wonderful trip to the Gielgud Theatre to see Oliver

On Wednesday last week, Year 9 were treated to a fantastic joint Music and History trip to London’s Gielgud Theatre to see the musical ‘Oliver’ and it was “tunes glorious tunes” from start to finish.

The journey into London became an unexpected sightseeing tour, courtesy of our double-decker bus. The girls had brilliant views of some of the capital’s most iconic landmarks, including Parliament Square, Westminster Abbey, Big Ben and Trafalgar Square, before hopping off at our final stop on Shaftesbury Avenue.

Once the curtain rose, the girls were captivated as one classic number followed another—Food, Glorious Food, You’ve Got to Pick a Pocket or Two, and Consider Yourself, to name just a few. Matthew Bourne’s choreography and direction, combined with Cameron Mackintosh’s production, created a vivid and energetic staging of this Tony and Oscar-winning musical. The show brought Dickens’ beloved tale to life magnificently, capturing both the charm and grit of Victorian London.

The trip was a perfect collaboration between the Music and History departments. In Music, the girls had previously studied songs from Oliver in Year 8, while in History they began their Year 9 curriculum by exploring Victorian Britain and the Industrial Revolution.

After an interval complete with ice-cream, the performance ended in a spectacular grand finale featuring a medley of the show’s biggest hits. Spirits were high on the journey home, with Mr Whiting providing a continued soundtrack as he “considered himself” part of the cast all the way back to ND!
