Spanish Corner – The importance of learning Spanish

Spanish Corner Sep 12th

Travelling to a Spanish-speaking country becomes a lot more meaningful when you have taken the time to learn its language. Did you know that Spanish is the third most spoken language in the world? There are over 580 million Spanish speakers in countries such as Spain, Argentina, Mexico, and Colombia. Languages are a way to connect people, cultures, and traditions all around the world. Choosing to learn Spanish opens so many doors to communicate with other people.

You might be thinking, โ€œBut with AI and translation apps everywhere, why do I need to learn Spanish?โ€ We were actually talking about this in my university interview. I think that it is incredibly important to understand that, no matter how quickly technology can translate words, it can never replace the nuance that comes with knowing a language. Dedicating the time to learn a different language, like Spanish, allows you to understand subtleties that no app or translator can ever fully capture. By learning Spanish, you arenโ€™t just preparing for your exams – languages are a fundamental life skill, and youโ€™re gifting yourself the ability to communicate with hundreds of millions of people around the world. This was one of the main reasons why I chose to do Spanish for my GCSEs, for my A levels, as well as to study at university.

Learning Spanish literally makes your brain work differently. It helps you to think more creatively, switch between tasks more easily, and see problems from new perspectives. As we said before, Spanish is spoken by over 580 million people worldwide. That means itโ€™s one of the most valuable languages you can have in the workplace. Employers consistently rank communication skills and cultural awareness as two of the most important qualities they look for, and learning a language develops both. Learning Spanish also gives you exciting opportunities to work abroad, in Spanish speaking countries.

The amazing thing about understanding just a few words is that it already gives you a connection to millions of people and their cultures. The more Spanish you learn, the more you can follow conversations, enjoy music and films, and travel with more confidence. Even knowing just a few words can make a huge difference when youโ€™re travelling: asking for directions, talking to someone new, or ordering food.

Prayer in Spanish:

Seรฑor Dios,
