Being curious, networking and embracing LinkedIn were three top tips from alumnae Emilia Roberts and Olivia Devenport, who dialled in this week to chat to ND6 students as part of our Career Pathways series.
First to join us was marketing executive Emilia, who after four years with global Tech firm Dyson, is now six months into a new role as Category Manager with leading homewares company Joseph Joseph. Responsible for the firm’s flagship kitchenware range, keen cook Emilia described how her role embraces everything from developing exciting new products and briefing designers, to tracking sales and presenting marketing plans to senior management.
Emilia attributed her placement year at Samsung – part of her four-year Marketing and Management degree – as the perfect foundation for her career, which also saw her living and working in Sweden for Dyson’s Nordics office. She advised the students to seek out networking and work experience opportunities and above all to ‘be brave, say yes, learn and stay curious.’
Next to dial in was Olivia Devenport, who is now four years into her flourishing career with renowned London auction house Christie’s. Talented artist Olivia chose an apprenticeship with Christie’s over university and is now a Data Governance Analyst, supporting teams who manage sales of everything from priceless jewellery to pop culture treasures.
It’s the perfect combination of business and art for Olivia, who advised the students target an industry or profession they’re passionate about, choose wisely and not feel under any pressure to ‘follow the crowd’. Like Emilia, she also recommended being curious and asking questions, networking, joining any special interest groups and embracing LinkedIn as a great way of building connections.
Sincere thanks to Emilia and Olivia for giving up their time to talk to the students. We wish them continued success in their careers.
