U14 Hockey Team at Surrey Cup Competition

On Tuesday the U14 Hockey Team took part in the Surrey Cup (Tiers 1 + 2) School County Competition. ND’s Pool Round took place at Epsom College and we were in a section with Sir William Perkin’s, Epsom College, Hinchley Wood, Reigate Grammar, St George’s and CLFS. It proved to be an excellent day of high standard hockey with all the teams striving to finish in the top 3 to then progress to the Surrey Finals in November.

The ND squad played with great commitment and spirit throughout the day and should be very proud with their performance and conduct. We began with a good 2-1 victory against SWP; the next match saw a defeat against Reigate Grammar but the team bounced back from this with a 1-0 win against Hinchley Wood. Two defeats followed against very strong St George’s and Epsom College teams but we finished with a hard-fought draw with CLFS. These results meant that ND finished 4th of the seven schools in our section, a very respectable result.

Congratulations to the whole squad for an excellent performance and a big thank you to the parents who came along to support.

Cecilia’s Big Walk!

Four weeks ago Cecilia mentioned that she wanted to do a “big walk”, “probably a marathon”. I asked her if she knew how far this was and queried what training she thought she might need to do. She came back the next day and told me that it was 42 km and that she didn’t really want to do any training. Encouraging her I insisted that we do a practice walk to see how she coped. This culminated in a four hour 17 km walk around Bushy and Home Parks with Goose, our high energy Vizsla. Full of confidence Cecilia was keen to have a crack at 42 km. I gave her every encouragement thinking that the marathon distance was unrealistic and with a following wind 30 km might be possible, in any case failure might provide a few valuable lessons for our ambitious 11 year old.

Last Sunday was the day of the London Marathon which seemed like a good day for the Big Walk. Not a great weather forecast but Cecilia was confident that a bit of rain would add to the challenge and wasn’t anything we should worry about.

With Caroline and Goose we set out from Wimbledon Common and I made it clear to Cecilia that my knees were unlikely to go the distance and Caroline might have to take over if we made it to 30 km. I think this spurred her on. We left Caroline & Goose behind just before we entered Richmond Park and met them at 26 km in Home Park with fresh supplies and lots of encouragement. By the time we made it to Bushy Park we had covered 31 km and she was struggling to keep going.

Finally, after 9 hours 47 minutes, 61,534 steps and 42.2 km we made it back to Home Park. Cecilia even managed to sprint for the last 200m.
