The whole prep school celebrated Earth Day on 22nd April this week. Earth Day is an annual international event held on 22nd April and is now recognised by more than a billion people around the world. Its aim is to raise awareness for our planet and the environmental challenges it faces. The first-ever Earth Day was held in 1970, and it continues today to encourage citizens around the world to unite.
It is an opportunity for people to show their support for the environment and come together to take action to help protect Earth.
The theme of Earth Day this year is ‘Our Power, Our Planet’. This is all about using the power we have as businesses, governments, communities and individuals to ensure the air is clean, oceans are clear, energy used is renewable and species are protected.
We learned that it is important that we all do our part to help protect our precious planet and our voice matters more than ever. We had some great ideas about taking small actions each day, such as turning off the lights when we leave a room, turning off the tap when we are brushing our teeth, and using a refillable water bottle; all these actions will help us to create sustainable long-term habits.
We created an Earth Hand Pledge in Form Time and shared ideas with our friends. Some of us also wore green and blue scrunchies and ribbons in our hair to recognise Earth Day.
Well done to all the prep girls and many thanks to the teachers for supporting this valuable moment of whole school reflection.
