On the 10th of March the sixth form Chemistry Students visited the Emmanuel Centre, in London, for a Chemistry in action Lecture Day. Over the course of the day we were spoken to by a variety of speakers, from a variety of disciplines within Chemistry, often branching into other science subjects as well.
This included Tim Gregory talking about Nuclear waste, and it’s potential uses within cancer treatment, medical diagnoses and long-lasting power sources for spacecraft. Kathryn Harkup, who talked about poisons, such as Arsenic, and their effects on the body. Going into detail about how they were collected, used and ultimately caught. During the day, there was also a useful exam tips section led by Peter Hoare who shared the most common mistakes made by A-level students during chemistry exams.
Other speakers, covered topics such as how small molecules create smells, the roles of metals in drug development and a discussion of methods to recycle more of the worlds wasted metal resources.
