Year 5 immersed themselves in an Ancient Greek afternoon this week, as part of their Stunning Start to their Humanities topic of ‘Ancient Greece’.
Greek music was playing in the background as the girls arrived, whilst Mrs Morgan ‘offered’ to begin the dancing!
The girls sampled some Greek delicacies, including Koulourakia, a tasty, sweet treat originating from Greece. They also tried Tzatziki. dipping in Greek-style tortilla chips (brush tortillas with olive oil, sprinkle with oregano, garlic powder, onion powder, and sea salt). Greek olives with Rosemary and garlic were also available to sample.
At the drinks table, there was: Vyssinatha (Sour Cherry Drink): A sweet and tart drink made by mixing sour cherry syrup with ice-cold soda and a splash of lemon juice. Additionally, the girls could try Lemonada (Greek Lemonade): Homemade lemonade often made with lemon zest, lemon juice, sugar/honey, and water, we served ours sparkling.
Whilst trying these foods, the girls viewed and discussed the many Greek artefacts on display for them to explore and investigate. One in particular – the water clock – elicited plenty of discussions.
Soon it was time to head back to the classroom to record the artefacts that we had investigated, and begin to think about the Ancient Greeks in more detail.
Well done, girls, a great afternoon of exploring!
