Year 5 had an incredible time visiting the senior school over the past couple of weeks, participating in a felt making activity in the Textiles department.
Mrs Kenworthy explained the process, which was detailed but great fun! Our listening skills were top notch!
Creating felt from wool is a specific process that involves placing the wool in horizontal and vertical sections, slightly overlapping, to create a solid base. Next, the girls chose some special wool fibres that had a glittery sheen to them, to embellish their base designs. Creating the design on bubble wrap allowed us to be able to fold and roll the wool, agitating the fibres so they stick together with the added fairy liquid and warm water. Rolling and pressing the fibres in the bubble wrap was hard work, but Mrs Kenworthy played some upbeat music to keep us working!
Finally, we were able to wash our “felt” out with warm water until it ran clear, and then we left the felt to dry.
Rosie gave a vote of thanks to Mrs Kenworthy and Miss Winnacott who assisted her.
Well done girls, you listened really well and worked hard to create some beautifully designed felts.
