Year 9 French and History Trip 2026

Last weekend, we went on our Year 8 and 9 French History trip. During the trip, we explored the history of World War I and World War II in depth. We also learnt about French traditions, including eating snails! In addition, we had the opportunity to practise speaking French.

The teachers made the trip both educational and enjoyable. We visited war museums, war cemeteries, a theme park and a snail farm. Some girls even tried snails and had the chance to hold them!

Overall, the trip was fantastic and we made many unforgettable memories.

The girls began their trip by immersing themselves in History with a visit to La Coupole, a World War II museum, where they learned about its role as a launch site for Nazi V2 rockets targeting Britain. They also enjoyed a fascinating 3D film about space in the museum’s planetarium, followed by a visit to a local chocolate factory.

Day 2 focused on remembrance and historical reflection. The girls visited the Thiepval Memorial and Museum, where they learned about the devastating impact of the Battle of the Somme and the many soldiers who lost their lives with no known grave, whose names are commemorated on memorials. A particularly poignant moment was when Alice C located the name of her great-great-great uncle, Lieutenant George Michael Hoste, who died on 7th October 1916 at the age of 30. A service of remembrance was held in his honour. The group also visited the Lochnagar Crater, the site of one of the first explosions of the Somme on 1 July 1916 and the largest man-made crater of the First World War, before concluding the day at Étaples War Cemetery. After such a meaningful day, the girls enjoyed a lively French-language scavenger hunt with their animateur.

On Day 3, the girls had a well-earned opportunity to relax and have fun at Parc Astérix. On the return journey home, they made one final stop at a snail farm, rounding off a varied and memorable trip.

The girls were a delight throughout the visit, demonstrating enthusiasm, respect, and curiosity. It is clear they gained a great deal from the experience while also having plenty of fun.

Well done to all the girls!
