Senior MUN Conference at Reed’s School
On Tuesday 12th May, Miss Fowler attended a brand new MUN conference at Reed’s School with a collection of students from Years 10 and 12, some of whom are seasoned MUN (Model United Nations) delegates by now, having thrown themselves in this year to the club and numerous trips.
Students were able to choose their own countries to represent – ranging from Brazil to the UK to Kuwait – and debate topics such as the current war involving Iran and the economic implications of the conflict; the rights of indigenous people to owning land and the potential return of artefacts to their countries of origin. I was really proud of the way that the Notre Dame delegates contributed Resolutions (with several chosen for debate, including Alexa F representing Australia and arguing for more humanitarian aid in active conflict zones).
The evening was a new initiative aimed at building the confidence of students in a smaller, supportive environment with students from Cranleigh and Reed’s and is hopefully the first of many!
Junior MUN Conference at Reigate
We have had a very busy week of ’MUNing’ this week, beginning with eight of our students attending the Junior MUN Conference at Reigate Grammar School including Thea, Alice C, Heidi, Alice H, Samantha, Bea, Mila and Savannah.
The girls had great fun debating topics in their committee meetings. The Economic and Financial Committee debated ‘Reducing global poverty through fair trade’, the Security Council debated ‘Addressing the Iran- US conflict’. The Disarmament and International Security Committee debated ‘Reducing the Global Trade of illegal Weapons’ and the Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Committee debated ‘Protecting Refugees and Asylum Seekers’.
The girls spoke with confidence and assurance while debating real world issues. They all thoroughly enjoyed the day and are looking forward to taking part in more MUN conferences in the future and honing their debating skills as well as broadening their understanding of current world issues.
